Chunky Crochet Cowl

Sometimes all you need is a little texture and a whole lot of cozy! That's just what you get with this chunky crochet cowl pattern! The detail of the stitching creates a beautifully unique texture, and the bulky squish of the wool will keep you toasty warm! Wins all around!

This was my first crochet pattern ever and it's still one of my faves! I've made it in several different colors and am always thinking of new color possibilities. In fact, I have an idea brewing for one right now!...Excuse me while I head for my yarn and hook... ;)

measurements:
cowl circumference measures approximately 26"
cowl height measures approximately 8"
what you will need:
2 skeins Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (or approximately 165 yds) in Butterscotch or another #6 super bulky weight yarn
size US N/10mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. To save time make sure to check gauge. GUAGE: 7 SC x 8 rows = 4X4"

This pattern uses a series of stitches to create the “bavarian stitch”.
For this pattern you will be working in the round and on the WS (wrong side) of your cowl throughout.
abbreviations:
CH - chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
TR – treble crochet
FPHDC – front post half double crochet
FPTR – front post treble crochet
SK - skip
YO - yarn over
REP - repeat
RS– right side
WS – wrong side
special stitches:
FPHDC (front post half double crochet) - YO, insert hook behind corresponding post, (see photo example #1 below) YO pull up a loop, YO and pull through all loops on hook.
FPTR (front post treble crochet) - YO twice, insert hook behind corresponding post, (see photo example #2 below) YO pull up a loop, YO pull through two loops on hook, YO pull through two more loops, YO pull through remaining two loops.
FPTR (front post treble crochet) cluster - YO twice, insert hook behind corresponding post, (see photo example #2 above) YO pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on hook, YO pull through two more loops, leave remaining two loops on hook; REP for each stitch in the cluster. (see photo example #3 below) To complete cluster YO and pull through all remaining loops on hook. (see photo example #4 below)

pattern:
CH 61.
Being careful not to twist CH row, SL ST in first CH to form round.
Note: Since you will be working on the WS of your cowl throughout, join with raised side of CH facing you, rather than flat side. (see photos below for the difference between the raised and flat side of CH)
Round 1: CH 1, (working on raised side of CH) SC in each CH around; join with SL ST in first SC. (60 SC)
Round 2: CH 1, HDC in same SC, *SK 4 SC, 9 TR in next SC, SK 4 SC, HDC in next SC, REP from * 4 more times; SK 4 SC, 9 TR in next SC, SK 4 SC; join with SL ST in HDC.
Round 3: CH 3, 4 FPTR cluster over next 4 TR, CH 4, FPHDC over next TR, * CH 4, 9 FPTR cluster over next (4 TR, HDC, and 4 TR), CH 4, FPHDC over next TR; REP from * to FPHDC before end, CH 4, 4 FPTR cluster over last 4 TR; join with SL ST in top of beginning 4 FPTR cluster.
Note: For each 4 FPTR cluster you will be pulling through 5 loops on hook to finish and for each 9 FPTR cluster you will be pulling through 10 loops. Be sure to double check the count before pulling through. See photo example #5 below for what the RS of your work should look like.
Round 4: CH 4, 4 TR in top of 1st cluster, HDC in next FPHDC, * 9 TR in center of next cluster, HDC in next FPHDC; REP from * to next to last cluster, 4 TR in top of 4 FPTR cluster; join with SL ST in top of CH 4. (see photo example #6 below for stitch placement)
Round 5: do not CH, FPHDC over same CH 4, *CH 4, 9 FPTR cluster over next (4 TR, HDC, and 4 TR), CH 4, FPHDC over next TR, REP from * to last 9 FPTR cluster, CH 4, do not FPHDC; join with SL ST in FPHDC.
Round 6: CH 1, HDC in same stitch, * 9 TR in center of 1st cluster, HDC in next FPHDC; REP from * around until last 9 TR, do not HDC; join with SL ST in HDC.
Round 7: REP round 3.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Turn cowl RS out and enjoy!
